How to stop caring about what people think about you

Ever notice how kids are so free and don’t care what people think about them? They are pretty funny, especially when they are honest or doing something that doesn’t make any sense to us as adults. Typically, our roles as adults is to teach children what’s right and wrong as well as other important life lessons. Ironically, God often times uses these little creatures called children, to teach us the lessons! We just have to be paying attention. Seems as if we need to look at them to learn how to stop caring about what people think!

This past summer, I had the privilege of attending the Pinky Promise Conference hosted by Heather Lindsey for the third time. Not only did the Lord use her and many other amazing women of God like Lisa Bevere to minister to me, but He also used some guests unexpectedly.

As I was waiting to be seated, I was standing next to a woman who had her son with her. The boy must have been about 5 years old or so. He was sitting on the floor with his legs crossed playing a made-up game with what I think was a tube of Chapstick. The game consisted of him trying to catch the Chapstick every time it was dropped by his moms’ friend. He had the biggest smile on his face! Every time he would miss the Chapstick and it fell on the ground, he would burst out into the most contagious laughter! It was while I was watching this, that I believe the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart, that we are to be like this child. Full of innocence, joy, purity, fun and laughter! My eyes were opened to the fact that as adults we are too busy just worrying, being tense, stressed and task oriented. We keep missing out on the simple joys and laughter in life. Then he said, I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven Matthew 18:3-4. Kids don’t sit there and stress over stuff, they just trust and believe that things will be provided for them. Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Matthew 6:26. What does this say about us? Are we really trusting God? We need to stop caring about what other people think, when we should only be living for God!

While sitting in my seat, God did it again! We were waiting for the next session to start, and while waiting, Heather Lindsey’s adorable daughter Taylor took the stage. She fearlessly started dancing and doing cartwheels. Not even bothered by the hundreds of women watching her, she danced! Clearly she was just enjoying herself. Even when she would fall, she would just get right back up again and keep doing her thing unapologetically! This is how the Lord wants us to be! He doesn’t want us to worry about what the world thinks of us. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Matthew 6:27.He wants us to stay focused on Him, even if we fall! We are to just get back up and keep going. We are not to be distracted by the world, we are to rejoice in His presence! Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant Galatians 1:10.

Once back home, I was talking with a friend who had shown me a video of her young sons. They were in a donut shop, and in the midst of them enjoying their donuts, they began to dance! The youngest even climbed up on a chair and continued to shake his butt in pure enjoyment of the moment! I encourage you to be like the little children! Stop caring about what people think. Pretend no one is watching. Laugh, play games, dance, fall, get back up and most of all… Shake your butt in the donut shop!
