Giving up the to do list

One quality that has always worked out for me is my organization. I’m definitely a “to do list” kind of girl. However, lately I’ve been really out of it. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed with all my tasks and have definitely been experiencing major burnout! Feeling all of this yet getting nothing done has definitely made me consider giving up the to do list!

Martha and I certainly have some things in common. In Luke 10:38-42, she is busy and distracted by the big dinner she was preparing for Jesus and His disciples. She went to Jesus to complain about her sister Mary who wasn’t helping her get everything ready. Instead of getting things ready for their guests, Mary had been sitting with Jesus listening to Him teach. Instead of Jesus telling Mary to help, He tells Martha that Mary had discovered the one thing worth being concerned about and it will not be taken away from her. There were a few key words in these verses that jumped out at me that was used to describe Martha… distracted, worried and upset about all the details. This is definitely how I’ve been feeling!

I have been like Martha with my to do list and tasks. I’ve neglected to be like Mary and discover the one thing worth being concerned about. I’ve neglected to just sit at the His feet and listen to Him teach! It’s no wonder why I’ve been so overwhelmed, unmotivated and burnt out. How much of this could have been avoided had I only taken the time to pray and spend time with God? He is the only one that can give me peace, clarity and rest in this crazy world.

Maybe we should all consider giving up the to do list every once in a while, to gain a better perspective in life and what’s really worth being concerned about. Let’s overcome distraction and worry in our lives. Remind ourselves that giving up the to do list is okay!
