I hate to say this, but it’s easy to forget God! It’s a real thing! Many of us often are down and out, begging and pleading with the Lord to see us through our circumstances. Unfortunately, once He gets us out safely on the other side of our problem, we forget all about Him. We are so sinful that it is easy to forget the Holy One.
We aren’t the only ones though! People throughout the Bible did the same thing. In the book of Exodus, Moses asks Pharaoh to let his people go. Pharaoh with his hardened heart says no. Each time he said no, God sent a horrible plague to Pharaohs land of Egypt and kingdom. Pharaoh begged Moses to ask God to stop the plagues then He will let the Israelites go. However, each time God stopped the plagues, Pharaoh changed his mind and kept the Israelites captive. Interesting that he just witnessed the miraculous signs and wonders of God for himself, yet it was easy to forget as he went back on his promise to set the Israelites free.
The Israelites did the same thing for years. The Lord rescued them from Egypt. They witnessed many miracles, including the parting of the Red Sea in two so that they can cross over on dry land. The Lord also provided for them while they were in the wilderness. Yet, they too seemed to find it easy to forget the Lord and they began to worship pagan idols and complain.
We too are like Pharaoh and the Israelites. When we have a problem and feel terrified, we beg and cry out to Him for help. We plead with Him to fix our problems. Yet as soon as there is some relief, we forget God and sin again! How many times must He have mercy on us and save us from the many problems we at times cause ourselves?
I know I am not the only one who has to become more intentional about staying grounded in God’s word so that it doesn’t become easy to forget God. We are sinners, because of this, our hearts are naturally rebellious towards the Lord at times. We must repent often and keep our eyes on the truth. As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness Proverbs 26:11. Let’s stop returning to vomit like dogs because we forget about God.
